Tectonics of the Kyushu-ryukyu Arc as Evidenced from Seismicity and Focal Mechanism of Shallow to Inter- Mediate-depth Earthquakes

چکیده
Tectonic features of the Kyushu-Ryukyu arc have been investigated in detail, on the basis of seismicity and focal mechanism of shallow to intermediatedepth earthquakes with magnitudes around and greater than 5.0. All shallow earthquakes in the Hyuga-nada region east of Kyushu are characterized by low-angled thrust faulting, which may be directly related to the underthrusting of the Philippine Sea plate beneath southwest Japan. Their frequent occurrence, dissected fault regions and somewhat large stress drop, in comparison with great earthquakes along the Nankai trough, may be attributed either to local stress concentration due to the contortion of the subducting plate resulting from southwestward warping of the trough, or to heterogeneous structure extending northward from the Kyushu-Palau ridge. The shape of the Wadati-Benioff zone and the stress state within the descending lithosphere show marked differences between the northern and southern Ryukyu arcs bounded by the Tokara channel; the dip of the zone at depths below

Evidence for Vertical Partitioning of Strike-Slip and Compressional Tectonics from Seismicity, Focal Mechanisms, and Stress Drops in the East Los Angeles Basin Area, California
We have synthesized the characteristics of the seismogenic zone in the east Los Angeles basin by analyzing earthquake data recorded during the past 30 years (1981–2010). The seismicity is distributed along the Whittier fault, with the majority of earthquakes located adjacent to the south side, in the depth range from 0 to 9 km, with b value of 1:1 0:05 and mostly normal and strike-slip faulting...
متن کاملInsights into the Aftershocks and Inter-Seismicity for Some Large Persian Earthquakes
This paper focuses on aftershocks behavior and seismicity along some co-seismic faults for large earthquakes in Iran. The data of aftershocks and seismicity roughly extracted from both the Institute of Geophysics the University of Tehran (IGUT) and International Seismological Center (ISC) catalogs. Apply some essential methods on 43 large earthquakes data; like the depth, magnitude as well as t...
متن کاملMasafi, United Arab Emirates earthquake: Insights into the seismotectonics of the northern Oman Mountains
A moderate (M ~5) earthquake struck the northeastern United Arab Emirates (UAE) and northern Oman on March 11, 2002. The event was felt over a wide area of the northern Emirates and was accompanied by smaller (felt) events before and after the March 11 main shock. The event was large enough to be detected and located by global networks at teleseismic distances. We estimated focal mechanism and ...
متن کاملPreliminary evaluation of induced seismicity at the Karkheh dam site in southwest Iran
The reservoir-induced seismicity (RIS) at the Karkheh dam site with a reservoir capacity of about 7.4x109 meters is investigated. Based on the assessment of the seismicity of the dam site in equal time periods before and after reservoir impoundment, it was found that the number of earthquakes have been tripled after impoundment, while their magnitudes and focal depths become smaller. The averag...
متن کاملIsolated intermediate-depth seismicity north of the Izu peninsula, Japan: implications for subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate
The subduction of the Philippine Sea (PHS) Plate toward the north of Izu peninsula, Japan, is of great interest because intraslab seismicity is absent where the buoyant Izu volcanic arc has been subducting over the past 15 Myr. This study analyzes 42 earthquakes in an isolated seismic cluster that occurred ~ 100 km north of Izu peninsula at depths of 40–90 km and discusses seismogenesis in the ...
